About
the Eurobodalla
The
Eurobodalla is a unique place name derived
from a Koori word meaning the 'Land of Many Waters' (later on White
fellas called it the 'Nature Coast') for the local government area on the South Coast NSW
Australia known as 'Eurobodalla Shire'. It is part of the
Australian Capital Region (ACR).
The
Eurobodalla is a narrow coastal
strip about 101 km long and 40 km wide; sandwiched between the Shoalhaven to the north, and Bega Valley to the south. The driving time from Canberra to the Eurobodalla
(Batemans Bay) is about 2 hours (147 kms); from Sydney about 3.5 hours (276 kms); and, from Melbourne
(Narooma) about 8 hours (764 kms).
With a population of over 35 000 and covering an area of 3 430 sq kms, the Eurobodalla contains three major towns:
Batemans Bay in the north
Moruya in the centre; and,
Narooma in the south.
In the mountainous areas to the west, the Eurobodalla is bordered by the Great Dividing Range including wilderness areas, national parks, and state forests: eg. Budawang, Deua, and Wadbilliga national parks; and, along the coast the Bimbiramala and Murramarang national parks (much of Forestry estate has now been handed over to National
Parks).
The
Eurobodalla has a rich cultural heritage from both the Koori and White sources. More
