Who is Nick Summers?
Nick Summers is one of a genre of artist difficult to classify. This characteristic of vague elusiveness may be annoying to those who like convenient 'artist type' slots.
That is why 'Community Artist' - however unusual it may seem to some - was chosen as the term best suiting Nick Summers. The community
artist defies the 'pigeon hole' assessment as s/he is a gifted
all-rounder, a very versatile person, passionate and ready to hop-in where needed.
My own view is that this kind of artist has a listening heart, tuned-in to the needs of the Community at a particular time - and it is to these special needs that s/he responds without looking for personal reward primarily.
Moreover, often having to ignore
political flack,
wanting only to give deep-felt expression to the broad canvas of human
experience: joy & happiness, sadness, success, failure,
emptiness, addiction, suffering, hope, despair, faith, fear, love and hate...all the usual
vicissitudes of life viz. a 'Celebration of Life' for better or worse,
in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health (if I may paraphrase a traditional version of the
Marriage Vows) .
Yet, however one wants to talk about Nick's work, the end result is basically
constant: a delightful ensemble responding to the changing, ever
fluctuating collage of community and individual need for poignant expression,
otherwise denied to many were it not for the artist.
Nick gives common human expression an outlet in his own inimitable way through murals,
paintings, illustrations, drawings, pottery, posters, signs, booklets and
other educational media such as screen printing onto T shirts.
Nick also has numerous qualifications - he trained first as a potter: then
follow the many courses attended, workshops completed, seminars and all
the rest of it. Yet these would count for naught if his heart were not
first in it.
Nick is a basically a Community oriented man who's also a talented and
qualified artist, and his heart is in it! - his own history of magnificent
works stand testimony enough. He
is President of the
Eurobodalla Arts Council.
Artists are men and women of dreams - we need 'dreamers' or the world would be rather a dull and uninspiring place - considerably the worse off for their absence.
I think that the lines from another artist, the poet T S Eliot's Little Gidding, suit Nick (and other similar artists) admirably:
'...We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time..'.
